Deboleena Paul is an accomplished performer and choreographer – that is an understatement. Paul is a master and scholar of Indian dance, holding three master’s degrees. She has worked as a performer and choreographer across more than 200 stages for audiences in India, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and the USA.

CHEENEE (2022)

A Story of Arrival, Experience and Culture.

Two lecturers from UWI St Augustine have been working on a documentary to record and investigate the culture and ethnography of the indentured Indians and their descendants. Cheenee, the film, includes interviews with people across the country to learn about the East Indian experience using food, dance, song, architecture, history and movement.

Academics is very important to dance education because it gives you the purpose behind movements, the effect of movement on the body, and even history.” A master and scholar of Indian dance from South Asia, Paul has studied dance since her early childhood and came to the Caribbean as a diplomat and performer with the High Commission of India. Her love of the region caused her to decide to stay and apply for a job at The UWI.

Friday Feel Good Story (2021)

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, students of UWI St. Augustine Dance Unit continue to overcome challenges and find success.

The university says this has been the experience of persons like Danielle Ryan, now in her final year of pursing a bachelor’s degree and Jerome Tank Kwok, who aims to be a lecturer after graduation.
